About the film: Islands Altings Besøg i København
The Icelandic members of the Althing (Iceland’s unicameral parliament) were given a ceremonial reception by the Danish crown. Originally limited to a consultative role, the Althing was granted legislative power in 1874 for matters of exclusive Icelandic concern.
Iceland already enjoyed immense autonomy at the time of this 1906 visit, but it would have to wait until 1944 to proclaim its independence.
