Europa Film Treasures

Film Treasures safeguarded by important European film archives are finally on the net!

Rediscover the childhood of cinema! An uncertain yet boisterous art. A boundless art, which has revolutionized the last century, and which still delights today. For a century, amateurs, collectors, and archives have gathered films existing today only by miracle: bits of film eaten into by humidity or heat, decomposed or even in ashes, discovered right on time or just too late...

These surviving images have withstood time thanks to the efforts of film archives, which preserve a good part of the world's memory in picture, although it is probable that already 70% of the images shot during the first fifty years of cinema is definitively lost. For quite a while, the chief European film archives have been endeavouring to rediscover these treasures by numerous collective or individual initiatives.

As explorers of times gone by, they have done everything possible to rediscover, restore, preserve, and show these fragile findings that lie idle in every corner of Europe.
Europa Film Treasures opens a new window on this meticulous and passionate work. In collaboration with the legal successors (when they have been identified) and depositaries, you will discover on this website a few examples of these precious films come from all over the world but safeguarded in Europe.

A foretaste
The videos are via streaming, and cannot be downloaded. But the free access allows you to discover without limit the joys of a different and magical cinema, a cinema that - just like a time machine - makes the images younger... and their viewers also.

All genres and time periods are on the playbill! From comedy to science fiction, from westerns to animation, from erotic to ethnological movies, Europa Film Treasures dives into the moving  heritage of European cultural and political history, through each film archive working on preserving their movies.

The site will be regularly expanded by new contributions:  films, documents, interviews, programs; and in a few weeks, all the information and film selection will be available in five languages.

Make the most of this website to discover the European archives, for, without them, this cinema would not exist anymore. A foretaste to go visit each of them later on and renew with the cinematographic show.

Thanks to the Internet and the European archives, finally something new is on the screen!

Have a good journey!
